I paint portraits of individuals that fall outside of the category entitled ‘typical.’ Since conformity and uniformity are so highly valued in our society today, I feel it is important to acknowledge and promote the presence of humanity in individuals with differences, imperfections, and unique qualities.  Difference is what makes a community united, tolerant, and most of all, able to provide a sense of belonging. Human beings at a  base level are all different, all complicated, all incredibly conscious, and all have a desire to belong. The subjects for my paintings range from people with mental and physical disabilities to elderly people to friends and family.  By referencing counterparts of elements such as age, strength, health, beauty and intelligence I make sense of my own personal viewpoint via my portrayal of others.  Ambiguity also plays a role in my work insofar as it reinforces our human instinct to categorize instantly.  In each of my portraits, there is an ambiguous ‘map’ present that works to defy direct reference or association.  These ‘maps’ aim to provide a sense of direction without a conclusion.
